DOI: 10.12788\/jhm.3625[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Topic Area<\/h3>\n<p>The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it challenges that significantly stretched our health care systems, including the ability to ensure adequate and meaningful communication at all levels.<a href=\"#notes\"><sup>1,2<\/sup><\/a> Shifts in care delivery such as dynamic staffing models, no visitor policies, limited direct contact with COVID patients, and others further exacerbated these challenges.<a href=\"#notes\"><sup>3,4,5,6,7<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Residency programs and hospital and institutional leaders had to act promptly to ensure:<\/p>\n<p>1) adequate communication with the residents regarding the rapidly changing protocols,<\/p>\n<p>2) access to guidance on effective communication with patients and family members,<\/p>\n<p>3) availability of guidance on tools for effective communication around death and grieving and other critical conversations.<\/p>\n<p>We reviewed the available data from various internal medicine graduate medical education (GME) programs across the country. From the available data, we found inconsistencies in how GME programs handled communication strategies, with wide discrepancies in the approaches used. Many programs seem to have relied heavily on recurring emails from program leadership to residents for sharing logistical information and inviting frontline provider input. Some programs provided more fulsome guidance through documents, webpages, and shared presentations.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Professional Society Guidance<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has published <a href=\"https:\/\/acgme.org\/COVID-19\/ACGME-Guidance-Statements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guidance<\/a> for sponsoring institutions regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, safety practices, accreditation, evaluations, and Sponsoring Institution Emergency Categorization.<\/li>\n<li>The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has provided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/coronavirus-covid-19-resource-hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resources and guidance<\/a> for medical students on dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic in and out of the hospital setting.<\/li>\n<li>The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) is making available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbme.org\/news\/coronavirus-covid-19-assessment-information-and-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some alternative assessment delivery methods<\/a> for physicians, medical school faculty, and students.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content_no_spaces&#8221;][vc_column][cesis_line_divider width=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text font_size=&#8221;10px&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1614795692363{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;background-color: #f9f9f9 !important;}&#8221;]<a name=\"notes\"><\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Emanuel EJ, Persad G, Upshur R et al. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32202722\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair allocation of scarce medical resources in the time of Covid-19<\/a>.
